St. Louis, Mo. – The Cottey College basketball team took home another conference win on the road against the Harris-Stowe State University Hornets 77-69 in St. Louis, Missouri on December 1, 2022.
Cottey (5-3) was led by Claudia Hadlock with 29 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Also going double digits for the Comets was Dally Coulter with 16 points and 5 rebounds, and Olivia Pruitt with 11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal. Aliya Grotjohn led the Comets on the boards with 7 rebounds.
Harris-Stowe State had five players in double digits. Samara Swire and Destiney Amaefula each had 16 points. Autumn Brown and Alicia Robinson each had 12 points, and Taia Smith had 10 points for the Hornets. Autumn Brown led the Hornets with 7 rebounds on the night.
The first quarter started out with Harris-Stowe going on an 8-3 run. After a quick timeout, the Comets were able to bounce back thanks to 6 quick points by Claudia Hadlock. Hadlock would go onto score 12 points, shooting 4 of 9 from the field, and 5 for 5 from the free throw line. The Comets were sixty percent from beyond the arc, edging out the Hornets in a close first quarter, 22-20.
Hadlock found herself again in rhythm in the second quarter, notching 13 points. Hadlock was on fire shooting 8 for 11 from the field and 3 of 4 from the three point line, ending the half with 25 of her 29 points on the night. The Comets outscored the Hornets in the second quarter, 23-18, heading into the half with a seven point lead.
The Comets cushioned their lead in the third quarter outscoring the Hornets 20-14, including a buzzer beater jump shot by Dally Coulter to end the third quarter up 65-52. The Hornets couldn't catch up in the fourth quarter. The Comets went on a six point run with 4:01 in the fourth quarter. The Hornets quickly answered back with a seven point run of their own, cutting the Comet lead to 9, but with only 1:03 left in the game the Comets glide to another conference win 77-69.
