The Cottey Athletic Department spent Martin Luther King Jr. Day giving back to those in need. The Comets spent Monday volunteering at multiple Habitat for Humanity ReStores in the Kansas City area. Students were able to donate their efforts in service of a goal larger than themselves. Cottey is proud to partner with such great organizations like Habitat for Humanity to help elevate our communities.
What is Habitat for Humanity?
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the global housing crisis by building affordable homes for low-income families. Volunteers, donors, and local communities come together to help build homes and improve lives. ReStores play a critical role in this mission by raising the funds necessary for Habitat's homebuilding programs.
The Role of ReStores in the Community
ReStores provide a sustainable and eco-friendly solution to home improvement needs while contributing to Habitat for Humanity's mission. Donated items are sold at reduced prices, helping homeowners access affordable materials for renovation projects or home improvement. At the same time, ReStores divert millions of pounds of reusable materials from landfills every year, promoting environmental sustainability.
These stores also help build a sense of community. They offer a place where people can donate unused items, shop for affordable goods, and volunteer in a welcoming environment. Whether it's an individual, a family, or a group of friends, volunteers contribute to the success of the ReStore while enjoying a hands-on experience in the world of home construction, sales, and customer service.
Volunteering at a Habitat for Humanity ReStore
Volunteering at a Habitat for Humanity ReStore is an opportunity to gain new skills, meet like-minded people, and make a difference in your local community. Volunteers can participate in a wide range of tasks, including:
-
Customer Service: Volunteers assist customers by helping them locate items, answering questions, and providing excellent service. This role can also include working at the checkout counter, where volunteers process sales and ensure smooth transactions.
-
Product Organization and Merchandising: Volunteers help organize donated products, ensuring items are displayed in an organized and attractive way. They also work on pricing items and maintaining inventory.
-
Donation Pickup and Sorting: ReStores often offer donation pickup services. Volunteers may assist in receiving, sorting, and evaluating donated goods, ensuring they meet quality standards before being placed on the sales floor.
-
Maintenance and Repair: In some cases, volunteers may work alongside staff to repair or refurbish donated furniture or appliances. This can be a particularly rewarding task as it allows you to directly contribute to the resale value and extend the life of items.
Cottey Athletics is proud to serve our local communities. If you, or someone you know, has a service project or volunteer opportunity, please contact us.
