Esports Recap: NACE Week 3 & 4

Esports Recap: NACE Week 3 & 4

The Cottey esports team was busy once again for Weeks 3 & 4 of National Association of Collegiate Esports competition. A grab bag of close matches, big vicotories, and heartbreaking defeats were on tap.

First, Overwatch had a thrilling 3-2 victory over Concordia College. The Comets had to fight tooth and nail to claw the victory away from the Bulldogs. For her efforts, Sophomore Circe Tosta was the esports Player of the Week. As a DPS, Tosta is a huge part of dealing damage to opponents and clearing space for the objective. Tosta has developed into a surefire starter for the Overwatch team, and continues to improve each and every day.

Valorant got back on the winning side of things with two dominating victories in Weeks 3 & 4 over Carolina University and Wittenberg University. Against Carolina, Junior Amya Corulla was the clutch player, putting up 17 and 14 Kills in the two games. Corulla had three clutch 1vs1 final moments, taking down the opponent to win the round. The highlight of the match was a sneaky flank by Freshman Kanik Surles, getting 4 Kills in a single round and taking Carolina by surprise. The Comets beat Carolina 13-5, 13-11. Cottey then took on Wittenberg University, taking a sharp 13-2, 13-4 victories in games for the 2-0 in the match. Sophomore Gibsun Harkins 14 Kills in each game were a steady presence as the Comets controlled the match. A new agent selection by Sophomore Ella Carlin in Game 2 brought some promising plays, perhaps a sign of a shifting tactic for Cottey.

Super Smash Bros had two matches against Hill College and Colorado Mesa University. While both ended in 0-2 losses, the team took more stocks off of the opponents than any match previously this season. The growth and improvement is obvious, and the team is sure to make leaps and bounds in competition. With a 2-2 record, the squad is primed to make the playoffs for the first time in team history.

Next up is a big week for the Comets. On Tuesday, Overwatch will take on Colorado Mesa University, then a doubleheader with Valorant on Wednesday. The team will host a watch party in Hinkhouse for that Wednesday doubleheader, set with graphics and TVs, starting at 6pm. Then, the Comets hit the road for a triple-header at Simpson College on Saturday.
