Comets Drop Home Opener against Southwestern

The Cottey Flag Football team stepped on the field for the first time this season in a Home contest against the Southwestern Moundbuilders, coming up just short in a 25-32 final score.

The Comets took a 19-7 lead into halftime, but could not sustain drives in the 2nd half as the Moundbuilders stormed back to take the game. Comet Quarterback Amya Corulla went 21/36 passing the ball, with 255 yards at 3 touchdowns. Corulla also added 34 yards and a touchdown rushing. On the first drive, Corulla became the program's all-time passing yards leader, passing recent graduate Jen Haberstock for the record. The 255 passing yards were also the 2nd most in a single game in Comet Flag Football history. Other records set in this game were from Angie Cruz, who logged the 5th ever 100 yard receiving performance in program history. Cruz's 100 yards helped make her the Career Receiving Yards leader in program history.

Freshman Tahmya Squire had a big day for the offense, putting up 74 yards on 7 catches. She also caught a Touchdown pass in the 2nd quarter. Squire also stepped up on defense, logging 6 tackles, 2 passes broken up, and an interception. Shamese Lee was the leader in tackles, grabbing 12 flags on the day, to go along with 3 receptions for 33 yards. Freshman Jonalynn Tolentino had a Touchdown and Extra Point reception in her collegiate debut, to go along with 7 Tackles on the defensive side of the ball. Fellow freshman Suzanne Aubert also had a catch for 7 yards in her first collegiate game.

The loss drops the Comets to 1-1 Overall and in KCAC action. Cottey got their first win on the season when Bethel College forfeited their opening contest.

Cottey returns to action at Home on Saturday, where they take on Baker University in a 1pm matchup. Fans can catch the action at team1sports.com/cottey
