There was some Senior Day magic in the air when the Comets took on the Spires for the final KCAC home contest of the year. The Comets would come out victorious 13-0, after a strong defensive showing, led by the lone Senior Kenzie Murdoch. Murdoch would lead the team with 9 tackles to help pitch the shutout for thet Comets.
It didn't start out perfect though, as the Spires would march down the field on the opening drive to get into the red zone. The Comets would tighten up their lines and get the stop to get the ball back. Cottey would get a first down on the strength of quarterback Amya Corulla's legs scrambling, but didn't get much going after that, punting it back to the Spires. Murdoch's punt would flip the field for the Comets, but the defense would give up a big play to get into Cottey's territory. That is where the 1st quarter would end, scoreless between the two teams.
On the opening play of the 2nd quarter, the Comets would get an interception from Shanell Norris to put their offense back on the field. Corulla would once again scramble up the field to put the Comets in the red zone. Then, she would find Shamese Lee for a 17 yard touchdown pass to give Cottey a 6-0 lead. Cottey's defense would make another stand to get the ball back on a punt. They would drive inside the 10 yard line, but couldn't come away with any points. The Spires would get a 1st down before halftime, but the score after 2 quarters was 6-0.
The Comets would get some yardage on the first drive of the second half, but ended up punting. A few costly penalties saw the Spires drive near the red zone but Tahmya Squire came up with a huge interception to halt their momentum. The Comets could not take advantage though, and turned it over on downs. Saint Mary's drive was halted almost immediately by a big Suzanne Aubert sack on 1st down. The Comets committed a penalty to give the Spires new life, but that was the end of the 3rd quarter.
Cottey got the ball back and marched right down the field, powered by a big pass play from Corulla to Joliette Johnson. That would lead to a 1 yard rushing touchdown by Corulla. She would find Johnson to convert the extra point, making the score 13-0. Shamese Lee would come up with a huge interception before the teams traded possessions until the final whistle.
The Comets win boosted them to 5-9 Overall, 4-9 in KCAC action. Kenzie Murdoch was the lone Senior for the Comets. Murdoch has been a pivotal figure in establishing the Flag Football team at Cottey. She is 2nd in Career Receptions, 6th in Career Receiving Yards, 3rd in Career Tackles, and one of 4 Comets with a 100-yard Receiving game.
