Comets Fall to Graceland in Flag Football Opener

Comets Fall to Graceland in Flag Football Opener

The weather is finally starting to cooperate for the spring sports to begin competition, with the Cottey Flag Football program getting on the field for the first time in 2025 when they traveled to Graceland for the Season Opener. In a back and forth affair, the Comets would fall just short in their comeback attempt, falling 18-12 to Graceland.

The Comets were shorthanded due to injuries, but fought valiently. Graceland controlled the contest in the first half, getting two touchdowns while keeping Cottey off the board. Cottey's defense held up to keep it tight, including a goalline stand on the 2nd drive of the game. Cottey came alive offensively in the 4th quarter, putting up their first touchdown on a 66 yard strike from Amya Corulla to Tahmya Squire to cut the deficit to 18-6. Graceland would quickly answer getting into the Comets Red Zone, but another goal line stand for Cottey kept them in the game.

Amya Corulla would rush for a 5 yard touchdown to make it a 18-12 game, but a Graceland first down would allow them to run out the clock and see the 18-12 final score.

Amya Corulla was the leading passer and rusher for the Comets, putting up 113 yards in the air and 131 on the ground. Laurencia Botts had the most receptions with 3, while Tahmya Squire had 2 for 60 yards and a Touchdown. On defense, Botts was the leading tackler with 12, while Squire had an interception for the Comets.

Cottey returns to action on Saturday with a road contest at St. Mary in Leavenworth, KS for a 1pm game.
