Spring sports are getting into the meat of their schedules, as flag football and softball each had midweek contests. Softball was on the road at Missouri Valley for a doubleheader, sweeping the Vikings, while Flag Football fell at William Woods 19-6.
Game 1 of the softball doubleheader was a tight contest, with the Comets prevailing 4-3. Abigail McPherson went the entire way in the circle for the Comets to get the win. On offense, freshman Presley Tipton paced the Comets by going 3-3 at the plate, including a Home Run in the 2nd inning. It was a tied game going into the top of the 7th, until senior Aariana Castillo would break the tie with an RBI Double that would score Tipton. It would be enough to get the victory for the Comets.
Game 2 saw a bit of a bigger margin, with the Comets winning 7-1. Amelia Gassman was the Pitcher logging the victory, spreading out Missouri Valley's 7 hits in the contest. On offense, it was the double-show; Bailey Cravens , Amelia Gassman (2) , Halen Hoelzeman , Makayla Snyder (2) all had extra base hits for Cottey.
The wins lift Cottey to 12-12 Overall, while standing at 2-2 in AMC play. The Comets return to action Friday with a double-header at home versus Crowley's Ridge.
For Flag Football, it was just too little, too late. The Comets fell behind and didn't have enough time to dig themselves out. Cottey's score would come on a catch and run by Xitlali Botts on a pass from Alyssa Hollis. Alina Jeanbaptiste would be the leader in receiving and on defense. She logged 5 catches for 50 yards, to go along with 7.5 tackles.
Cottey falls to 2-6 Overall. They return home Saturday for a matchup with Baker University, set for a 6pm start.
