Comets Finish Strong In Drury University Tournament

The Cottey College Softball Program traveled to Springfield, MO this past weekend to take part in the Drury University Tournament. The Comets would play 3 different NCAA Division II schools over the weekend, knocking off one of the institutions. 

 

Cottey College vs. Northeastern Oklahoma State

 

The Comets would begin the Drury University Tournament against NCAA II Institution against Northeastern Oklahoma State. The Comets would get going early, posting two runs in the bottom of the first. Jenna Wilson would hit in the lone RBI and an error would lead to the second run. 

 

Brooke Vicory would take the mound and would keep the Riverhawks scoreless until the top of the sixth inning. Northeastern's Rosenquis would drive in two run on a double, while Evans would bring in the go ahead run. A scoreless seventh inning would give the Riverhawks the win over the Comets. 

 

Cottey College vs. Evangel

 

Cottey College would face a solid Evangel University program in the second game of the tournament. The Valor's would get on the board early, with Hanner bringing in 2 runs on a sacrifice fly out to right field. Hanner would get right back to work in the fourth inning with a solo home run to right field. 

 

Lauren Johnson would bring in the lone run for the Comets in the 5th inning off of a double to right field. An error in the bottom of the fifth inning would lead to Evangel's fourth and final run. 

 

Cottey College vs. Nebraska-Kearney

 

The second day of the Drury University Tournament would start early for the Comets. Cottey would begin the day against Nebraska-Kearney. Nebraska-Kearney would use a strong defense to keep the Comets scoreless while posting 6 runs themselves. Lacey Cruz would be a bright spot in the game, giving up only 1 run on 3 hits. Cruz would also have 4 strikeouts in the 2.2 innings pitched. 

 

Cottey College vs. University Minnesota-Crookson

 

The Comets would take on their final opponent of the tournament, NCAA II member University Minnesota-Crookson. Lacey Cruz would find herself in a pitchers duel for the first 5 innings of the ball game. Cruz would strikeout the first 7 batters she faced, while Kelly would strikeout 4 of the first 6 for Minnesota-Crookson. 

 

The Comets would finally get on the board in the top of the sixth inning on a pass ball that would score Aryana Palencia. Jenna Wilson and Aariana Castillo would each double in the inning to bring in one run a piece. The Comets would record three straight outs to end the sixth inning. Lauren Johnson would add two insurance runs in the bottom of the 7th inning with a home run to right field. Lacey Cruz would shut the game down, recording three strikeouts in the 7th inning to give the win to the Comets. 

 

Lacey Cruz would finish the game with 16 strikeouts while only giving up 4 hits.

 

The Cottey College Softball program will travel to Arizona on Monday, March 13 to take part in the Tig Softball Tucson Invitational Games.
