Columbia, MO- The Cottey College Comets softball team started out the AMC Softball Tournament strong as they defeated the Lyon College Scots. The Comets (30-17), advance to the next round in the tournament, with an 8-0 win.
Alyssa Montoya led the Comets' offense, going 3-3 at the plate and scoring two runs. Aryana Pealencia also also had a great showing, bringing in three RBI's to help secure the win. Meanwhile, Lauren Johnson, the recently named AMC Player of the Year, contributed two RBI's to the team's total.
The Comets also had an impressive pitching performance, combining for a no-hitter. The co-AMC Pitcher of the Year, Lacey Cruz started the game and struck out seven batters in just three innings. Amelia Gassman came in as a reliever and struck out five batters in two innings, helping to maintain the shutout and secure the victory for the Comets.
The Comets get the rest of the day to prepare for tomorrow as they face the winner of the afternoon game against Columbia College vs. William Woods.
