Cottey Falls to Lyon

Nevada, Mo. – The Cottey College basketball team dropped their conference opener to Lyon College 89-75 inside the Hinkhouse Center in Nevada, Missouri on November 17, 2022.   

Cottey (3-2) was led by Dally Coulter with 17 points going 8-of-12 from the field with 10 rebounds.  Sara Montesdeoca followed closely with 16 points, three assists and five rebounds going 7 of 10 from the field.  Olivia Pruitt also notched 16 points, three assists, and three rebounds.  Nicole Hagerman was strong off the bench with 7 points going 3 of 5 with 2 assists and one rebound.

Lyon College was led by Allison Byars (30 points and 4 steals), Paige Tate (12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals), and Kayla Richardson (12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals)

Cottey cut an early lead by the Scots to 13-10 with a jump shot by Dally Coulter and an assist by Claudia Hadlock with five minutes left in the first quarter.  However, an 11 point run by the Scots capped by a Kristen Baham layup had the Scots up 24-10 coming out of the first quarter. 

The Comets and Scots were back and forth in the second quarter and ultimately the Comets outscored the Scots 17-15 in the second quarter, cutting the Scots lead to 39-27 going in to the half. 

Claudia Hadlock started the third quarter with a 3 point shot.  However the Scots were able to increase their lead, outscoring the Comets 29-26 in the third quarter.  The Comets capped the third quarter on a high note with a three pointer by Aliya Grotjohn.  One player from each team lead from the field with Dally Coulter from the Comets notching 11 of her 17 points and Allison Byars notching 13 of her 30 points in the third quarter.  The Scots headed into the fourth quarter 68-53.  

Sara Montesdeoca opened up the fourth quarter with two made jump shots in the first minute for the Comets and the Comets were a strong 58 percent from the field in the fourth quarter, but unable to stop the Scots, ultimately dropping their conference opener at home 89-75.

Up next for the Comets will be conference opponent Central Baptist at 1:00 pm on Nov. 19th at Hinkhouse Gymnasium in Nevada, MO.
