
Nevada, Mo. – The Cottey College Comets basketball team dropped a close one at home against conference opponent University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy Eutectics 66-58 at Hinkhouse on December 3, 2022.
The Comets (5-4) were led by Sara Montesdeoca with 19 points and 9 rebounds 4 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks. Lauren Jones also went double digits on the night with 11 points.
The Eutectics (7-3) were led by Grace Beyer with 19 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. On Beyers' heels was Elizabeth Allanach with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal.
Six lead changes in the first quarter had the conference foes trading shots. Olivia Pruitt led the Comets in the first half scoring 7 points with 1 rebound. Pruitt was 3 for 4 from the field and 1 for 1 beyond the arc. A late first quarter layup by Makenzie Schierding sent the Eutectics into the second half up 18-11.
The Comets outscore the Eutectics 18-12 in the second quarter to head into the half down only one. Lauren Jones from Cottey opens the second quarter with a three pointer and a Sara Montesdeoca layup pulls the Comets to within two of the Eutectics. The Comets eventually overtake the Eutectics with a made layup and a free throw off the foul by Montesdeoca. A late layup with less than a minute on the clock by Makenzie Schierding put the Eutectics up by one going into the half.
The first minute of the second half had the teams trading three point shots with Derin Akdeniz answering an Elizabeth Allanach 3 pointer. Allanach would lead the charge for the Eutectics scoring 11 of their 22 points in the third quarter and going 3 for 3 from the three point line.
The fourth quarter opened with the Eutectics up 52-47. Three pointers by Montesdeoca and Jones had the game tied at 58-58 with 3:25 left in the game. Eight unanswered points by the Eutectics led them to victory with a 66-58 final.
