Comets Defeat Patriots in Strong Performance

Nevada, MO. – The Cottey College Comets (10-13, 5-10) basketball team took home a conference home win against Baptist Bible College (8-13) by a score of 75-51 at Hinkhouse Gymnasium on February 4, 2023.     

The Comets were led in that effort by Claudia Hadlock with 25 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists.  Sarah Hunt scored 16 points with 3 rebounds and 2 assists.  Sara Montesdeoca with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists.  Dally Coulter with 10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists.    

 

The Bible Baptist Patriots were led by Josie Sullivan with a double-double 10 points with 11 rebounds and Cassidy Hambelton with 13 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists.  

 

Sara Montesdeoca with the first basket of the game for the Comets to start off a 12-1 scoring frenzy for the Comets early in the quarter.  The Comets maintain that lead throughout the first quarter and the quarter ends with Comets ahead by 6, up 22-16.  The Comets shoot 31% from the field and are 9 of 10 from the line in the first quarter.  The Patriots are 33% from the field, including 50% from the arc and 4 of 6 from the line.   

 

The Patriots open up the second quarter with a layup and three pointer in the first .40 seconds.  The Patriots pull to within 4 with 6 mins left in the quarter on a Harley Maxwell layup.  A 14-2 tear by the Comets pad their lead to 16, up 42-26.  The comets were 37% from the field, including 2 of 4 from beyond the arc and 66% from the line.  

 

Back from the half, the parties trade quick baskets in the first minute, a Harley Maxwell layup for the Pariots and a Sara Montesdeoca layup for the Comets.  The teams trade basket for basket and the Patriots are only able to make up one point on the Comet lead.  The Comets maintain a 15 point lead after three points.  The Patriots make their most of the time with the ball, shooting 54.5% from the field.  The Comets add another 9 to their lead in the fourth quarter.  A quick 7 points to start the quarter by Comets and the Patriots are unable to make any headway on the Comets.  The Comets come away with the win 75-51 at home.
