Cottey College Basketball 2023 Season Primer

As the curtains rise on the 2023 Cottey College basketball season, a new Comet team takes the court. This season marks the final year of an illustrious coaching career for Maryann Mitts, whose legacy is woven deep into the fabric of Comets basketball. With a roster consisting of both familiar and fresh faces, the Comets look to build upon last year's debut in the American Midwest Conference.

Returning Strength

The Comets enter the season with a unique advantage - all five starters from the previous year are back in action, along with multiple players with varsity experience coming off the bench.

Claudia Hadlock, the reigning American Midwest Conference Freshman of the Year, stands as the team's linchpin, poised to continue her prolific scoring spree. Her deft touch and unparalleled court vision are set to lead the Comets this season.

Sara Montesdeoca, a veteran returning starter, is primed to dominate the boards, combining an consistent average of seven rebounds per game as well as seven points per game.

Sarah Hunt, who transferred from Neosho County Community College last season, demonstrated her scoring prowess by averaging nearly eight points per game. Her seasoned experience will undoubtedly bolster the Comets' offensive strategy.

Dally Coulter, a stalwart in the post, brings her strong presence to the court once more. With an average of over seven points per game, Coulter's resilience under the basket will continue to be a cornerstone of the team's success.

New Faces, New Firepower

The infusion of fresh talent adds a new edge to the roster. Autumn Wallace, arriving from State Fair Community College, brings a scoring average of 10.4 points per game, showcasing her proficiency in putting points on the board. Her dynamic style of play promises to provide a potent boost to the Comets' offense.

Akyria James, an All-State guard hailing from Arkansas, is set to make waves with her tenacity and skill. Her presence promises to fortify both the offensive and defensive fronts, adding depth to an already experienced lineup.

The Comets were picked to finish 7th in the American Midwest Conference coaches pre-season poll. The Comets finished 8th in the regular season standings a year ago.

The season opener is Saturday October 28th at Home, against Southwestern College.
