Comets Fall to Arkansas Baptist 63-68

Basketball is a game of four quarters. The Cottey Comets controlled three of the four quarters in their matchup with Arkansas Baptist. However, the Buffaloes would control the most important one, the 4th quarter.

The Comets jumped out to a 15-11 lead at the end of the 1st quarter, with Junior Dally Coulter leading the way with 7 of those points, while also grabbing 3 boards in the 1st quarter. The trend would continue in the 2nd quarter, with the Comets extending their lead to 37-27 heading into the locker room at halftime. It was Junior Sarah Hunt's quarter to shine, as she poured in 13 points in the second frame alone, including to deep shots from beyond the 3-point line. The Comets defended well for the entire first half, limiting Arkansas Baptist to a single 3-pointer through 20 minutes of play.

The third quarter was a back and forth affair, with neither team gaining much of an advantage. The Comets forced the Buffaloes into 6 turnovers, but couldn't capitalize on the offensive end, only making three field goals in the quarter. The Comets did shoot well from the free throw line, putting in 7 of 9 foul shots. Early in the 4th quarter, it looked like the Comets were going to take firm control of the game, pushing their lead to 15. But then, it started to go downhill. The Buffaloes forced 8 Comet turnovers in the final frame, slowly clawing back into the game. They tied the game up and took the lead with just over 2 minutes remaining. The Comets would briefly regain a 60-59 lead on a pair of Sarah Hunt free throws, but Arkansas Baptist would take it back in the next trip down the floor. The Buffaloes would convert from the free throw line to prevent any sort of comeback by the Comets, leading to a final score of 68-63.

The Comets return to action on November 7th at home, a matchup with Manhattan Christian. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30pm
