In one of the highest offensive outputs in program history, the Cottey Comets put on a display for fans in their 94-18 victory over the Manhattan Christian Thunder. Penda Ndiaye put the Comets on the board first with a layup early in the 1st quarter, and the team never looked back. The score at the end of the 1st quarter was 28-6, and the Comets continued to put points on the board for all four frames.
The Comets had five players in double figures scoring, with all five of those coming off of the bench. Junior Autumn Wallace led the way for the Comets on the night, putting 18 points in the bucket in just 11 minutes of play. Senior Derin Akdeniz poured in 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Karley Painter and Jya Barksdale added 13 points apiece. Painter also grabbed 6 boards, including 5 on the offensive end, to go along with 3 steals. Barksdale was all over the floor, adding 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals in addition to her points. Lesley Chalmers was the fifth Comet to score in double figures, putting up 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Senior Olivia Pruitt just missed out on double figures, scoring 8 points, while also adding 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals. In a game with a wide margin, Comet starters played relatively few minutes, but Penda and Dally Coulter each managed to grab 5 boards in the contest. The Comets forced 31 Thunder turnovers, while limiting themselves to only 3 in the game. Cottey shot extremely well from the floor, putting in 53.8% of their field goal attempts.
The win puts Head Coach Maryann Mitts one step closer to the historic 300 win club. This was Mitts' 297th victory at the collegiate level.
The Comets return to action Saturday November 11th at Columbia College, their first conference matchup of the season.
