The American Midwest Conference has lots of parity when it comes to Womens Basketball. Therefore, no conference game is ever easy; and that was proven on Saturday as the Comets took on the Central Baptist Mustangs.
The entire game was a gritty performance by both teams, and the first quarter was a introduction into the game, where both teams scored 10 points. Both teams emphasized solid, physical defensive styles, which made scoring a task. The same was true for the 2nd quarter, which led to halftime score of 19-17 in favor of the Comets. After the teams returned from the locker room, it was game on, as scoring levels increased.
The Comets had their best quarter of the game in the 3rd, outscoring CBC 16-8 on the strength of going a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line as a team. The Comets also made two of their 3 point attempts in the quarter, while the Mustangs did not see any long distance balls go in. From there, the game would tighten a little as the Mustangs mounted their comeback attempt, but the Comets would ultimately keep them at bay, resulting in a 52-41 victory.
The win moved the Comets to 9-5 overall, 1-3 in AMC play. The Comets are one of 6 AMC teams who have one AMC victory so far, meaning each game will be vital to conference seeding. The Comets were led on the night by Autumn Wallace, who put up 19 points and 6 rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Sarah Hunt with 10, and Claudia Hadlock with 12. Hadlock came off the bench as she recovers from an injury, but still provided a vital scoring spark for the Comets. Sarah Hunt, Sara Montesdeoca, and Dally Coulter each had 7 rebounds, while Jya Barksdale had 4 assists for Cottey.
The Comets are slated to return to action Tuesday January 9th on the road at Hannibal La-Grange with a 5:30pm tipoff. The webpage will update any weather related changes as soon as possible.
