The Cottey Comets returned to action Thursday evening in Hinkhouse Gym for a matchup with the UHSP Eutectics. The Eutectics came into the game with the conference's leading scorer in tow, Grace Beyer, who averages over 32 points per game. Despite the Comets limiting Beyer to 11 points on the night, they fell 56-59.
The game was close throughout, although the Eutectics held the lead for most of the contest. Each time the Comets would close the gap, UHSP would answer with a bucket of their own. Throughout the game, Freshmen Akyria James and Jya Barksdale had the unenviable task of guarding Grace Beyer, and did a great job limiting the do-it-all guard to 11 points, with only 3-10 shooting from the floor. On the offensive end, the Comets were led by Sarah Hunt, who poured in 29 points. Dally Coulter was the leader on the boards, gathering 8 rebounds and adding 6 points.
In the 4th quarter with just over a minute remaining, the Eutectics held a 6 point lead, until Sarah Hunt hit a 3-pointer. The Comets would grab the defensive rebound off a Grace Beyer miss, and had 4 seconds remaining with a chance to tie the ballgame. Unfortunately the 3-point attempt fell just wide of the hoop, and the Eutetics took the 3 point victory.
The Comets have a week off before returning to play, a road trip to Williams Baptist on Feburary 1st.
