Comets Kick Off Conference Play with a Win

Comets Kick Off Conference Play with a Win

The 2024-25 American Midwest Conference Womens Basketball slate has begun. For Cottey College, that started with a bang, taking down the Missouri Baptist Spartans  61-47. The Comets came out firing in the first quarter, taking a 23-11 lead, and never let go of that lead.

In that first quarter, Claudia Hadlock put up 8 points to pace the Comets. The Comets had a wide range of scorers, leading to a balanced attack all night. The 2nd quarter was more of the same, albeit with a little less scoring. In a bright spot for the Comets, Freshman Brecklen Morrison went 3-3 from the field in the 2nd quarter, including a buzzer beating rebound and layup as time expired in the first half.

Fans in attendance were able to enjoy some halftime entertainment from Robyn Slain, a marvelous performer whose accolades have landed her in Ripleys Believe It Or Not series.

The third quarter was a slugfest for a good portion of the quarter, with only three points scored between the two teams through five minutes of action in the 2nd half. The fourth quarter did see the Spartans see a bit of life, outscoring the Comets in the final frame and limiting the final margin. In the end, it was a 14-point victory for Cottey, the first conference win under Head Coach Evan Belk.

Sarah Hunt and Autumn Wallace were the only Comets in double figures scoring, putting up 13 and 12 points respectively. Brecklen Morrison just missed out with 9 points, a season high for her this year.

The Comets return to action Saturday for a 1pm tip against fellow conference rival Stephens College. Cottey stands at 4-2 Overall, 1-0 in conference play.
