Comets Overcome Slow Start to Take Down Stars

The Cottey Comets got off to a slow start when they hosted fellow American Midwest Conference squad Stephens College at the Hinkhouse Center on Saturday afternoon. The Stars jumped out to a quick lead in the first, with a 13-3 margin with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Comets would go on a bit of a run to close the quarter, but still trailed after one frame. It would be more of the same in the 2nd, with Stephens extending the lead to a 20 point margin 32-12 with four minutes left in the first half. The Comets  finally went to work, sparked by a Brecklen Morrison three pointer. Morrison would then hit two more treys to help tighten the contest to a 35-27 margin at halftime.

Cottey would go on a 11-0 run to start the 3rd quarter, with Senior Sarah Hunt really coming alive from beyond the arc. The Comets would outscore the Stars 23-8 during the quarter, with Hunt putting up 19 by herself, including five 3's. With a seven point lead, Cottey never looked back, always keeping the Stars at arms length en route to the 64-52 victory.

Hunt would lead all scorers with 27, while Freshman Brecklen Morrison would set a new career high for points with 15 off the bench for the Comets. Morrison's four 3's were the spark that the Comets needed, along with a spectacular And-1 finish that sent the crowd into a frenzy. Autumn Wallace and Dally Coulter were solid on the glass, grabbing 9 and 7 rebounds respectively. Jya Barksdale was the leader in assists with 4, while Akyria James had two steals on defense.

Cottey now stands at 5-2  Overall, 2-0 in American Midwest Conference play. Cottey returns to Hinkhouse for a non-conference matchup with McPherson College Tuesday night with a 5:30pm tip.
