Comets Continue Winning Streak On Thursday Over CBC

Comets Continue Winning Streak On Thursday Over CBC

For the first time since joining the NAIA, the Cottey Comets Basketball team have a 5 game winning streak. Cottey would take down the Central Baptist College Mustangs 60-49 on Thursday evening.

It didn't look like that would be the case early, as the Mustangs very much controlled the flow of the game in the first half. The Mustangs had a balanced scoring approach across the game, making it tough for the Comets to key in on any particular player. The Mustangs held a three point advantage going into halftime, but it felt as though the deficit was much bigger for the Comets.

The 2nd half began much like the first, with the Mustangs methodically scoring, while the Comets could not seem to find their shooting touch. With just over three minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter, the Mustangs held a ten point lead 42-32. The, Autumn Wallace took over. The Senior would make a few free throws to start the run for the Comets, leading a 18-0 charge that would take Cottey into the lead and never look back. Wallace's free throws, along with a buzzer beating 3-pointer at the end of the quarter, clearly helped turn the tide and momentum of the contest. Akyria James would also lead the effort for the Comets, coming up with some big steals, and big shots throughout the contest. CBC would close the gap to 5 points on a pair of free throws with 2:45 remaining, but those would be the final points scored for the Mustangs as Cottey would close the game with seven straight points, including another huge And-1 play from Autumn Wallace

Wallace would lead all scorers in the contest with 17, while Sarah Hunt and AuShae Farris each scored in double figures with 10. Akyria James just missed out on double figures with 9 points, but also added 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals.

Cottey's win lifts them to 7-2 Overall, 3-0  in American Midwest Conference play. The Comets head to Mission University for a Saturday afternoon matchup at 1pm. Fans can catch the action on the radio, in a partnership with KNEM/KNMO Radio and Mike Harbit, who will be on hand to call the game live.
