Hadlock's Shooting Touch Returns in Comets Victory over Hannibal-LaGrange

Hadlock's Shooting Touch Returns in Comets Victory over Hannibal-LaGrange

For the first quarter of the season, something was just that slight bit off with Junior Claudia Hadlock's three-point shot. On Thursday evening, that seems to have worked itself out, with Hadlock leading all scorers with 21 points in a 82-34 victory over the Trojans. Hadlock would go 8-13 from the field, including 50% from 3-point range. She added an assist to go along with leading scorer duties in just 19 minutes on the floor.

Cottey took control of the contest early, with the score after one quarter 17-10. The 2nd quarter is where the Comets put the game away, outscoring the Trojans 35-4 in the 2nd frame. The 2nd half was closer in margin, but the Comets would win all four frames in the scoring column. In a balanced scoring attack, Sarah Hunt was the only other Comet in double figures, putting in 11 points. Autumn Wallace was the leading rebounder with 5, while Akyria James and Brecklen Morrison shared top assists with 3 apiece. On the defensive side, Jya Barksdale cleaned up, garnering 5 steals in the contest. A  couple Comet freshmen also made their varsity debuts in the contest, with Xitlali Botts and Ellaina LaNear each getting into the contest and scoring their first official points as Cottey Comets.

It was a good shooting night for Cottey, shooting 46.9% from the field, and an outstanding 48.1% from the 3-point line. If there was one area where the Comets struggled, it was at the free throw line, where they only  converted 56.3% of their chances at the charity stripe.

Cottey's record raises to 8-3 Overall, and 4-1 in American Midwest Conference play. Cottey now returns home for a matchup of top conference teams when Columbia College comes to the Hinkhouse Center on Saturday for a 1pm tip-off. The Cougars are undefeated on the season, including 5-0 in conference play.
