
It was a balanced attack that helped lead the Cottey Comets to a win on the road over the Missouri Baptist Spartans 72-57.
Four Comets scored in double figures, including two coming off of the bench. Autumn Wallace was the leading scorer for the Comets with 15; other Comets in double figures were Brecklen Morrison with 13, Sarah Hunt with 12, and Lesley Chalmers with 11. Jya Barksdale just missed out on double digits, putting up 9 points for Cottey. Wallace completed the game with a double-double, also leading the Comets with 11 rebounds, completing the feat. Claudia Hadlock was the distributor of the day, adding three assists for the Comets.
The first quarter was the Autumn Wallace show, putting up 7 points, and going a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line as the Comets barely took the quarter 16-14. The 2nd quarter was a different story, as the Comets stepped up their defense, as well as put the pedal on the gas offensively. The balanced attack came to life, with the Comets putting up 23 points in the 2nd to take a 39-24 lead into halftime. Coming out of the break, the game went much like the opening frame, with Cottey barely taking the quarter. By the 4th, the Comets were strong enough to see the game off to a win without too much struggle, relying on the lead they built for the first three quarters of play.
Cottey's win elevates them to 12-5 Overall, and 8-3 in American Midwest Conference action. Cottey takes on Stephens College in Columbia on Saturday in another big time matchup for conference seeding.
