With the snow and ice out of the way, the contest between Cottey College and William Woods was finally able to take place, with Cottey taking a 70-48 victory in Hinkhouse on Tuesday evening.
The game had orginally been scheduled as the first game of the new year, but winter conditions forced the reschedule. The wait was sweet for the Comets, as they were able to take care of business. It didn't look that way the entire time however, as the Owls were threatening to make it a close game early. It was a two point margin after the first quarter, with Cottey making some unforced errors and getting into foul trouble. Cottey did come alive in the 2nd quarter though, taking a 33-23 lead into halftime.
At halftime, the local Nevada Special Olympics Basketball teams put on a halftime performance, showing spectators their skills while preparing for their upcoming contests. Coach Bonnie Franklin explained to the crowd three of the events that the team competes in, giving a demostration of skills, as well as 3on3 and 5on5 scrimmages. Cottey Athletics is proud to support the local Nevada Special Olympics program, and thoroughly enjoyed their halftime display!
As the Cottey vs William Woods game returned to action, Cottey continued to control the flow of the game, building a 20-point lead, and seeing out the contest without much drama. A milestone hit during the game was Senior Sarah Hunt, moving up in the Record Book for Career Scoring, taking over 3rd place all-time for the Comets. She was the leading scorer for the Comets, putting 15 points on the board to go along with 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Autumn Wallace and Claudia Hadlock joined Hunt in double figures, scoring 14 and 13 points respectively. Dally Coulter just missed out on the double figures party with 9 points, while also being the game's leading rebounder with 9 boards. The chase is on for multiple career records, and it will be exciting to see where these Comets in up when it is all said and done.
Cottey's record lifts to 13-6 Overall, 9-4 in American Midwest Conference play. Cottey returns to action on the road at Central Baptist Thursday for a 5:30pm tip-off.
