A little shift every now and then can be a good thing, and that was the case when Cottey took on American Midwest Conference foe Hannibal-LaGrange in Hinkhouse on Thursday night. A new look starting lineup helped kick the game off to a hot start, fueling the Comets to a 75-46 victory.
MacKenzie Wohlers and Lesley Chalmers each made their first start of the year, while Sara Montesdeoca logged her 2nd. Mainstays Claudia Hadlock and Sarah Hunt rounded out the starting five for the Comets. Hunt would kick things off for the Comets, scoring 9 points in the first 6 minutes of the contest, aided by Montesdeoca putting 6 on the board in a perfect 3-3 from the field performance. The 2nd quarter is where Freshman Brecklen Morrison showed her offensive chops, putting up 7 in the frame. The 1st half ended on a super long range hail mary heave from Lesley Chalmers, giving the Comets all the momentum heading into the locker room with a 44-19 lead.
The Trojans did get an uptick in scoring in the 2nd half, led by Ivy Lesley's 29 points. The dice had been cast however, as the Comets were able to hold their lead throughout the 2nd half. Sara Montesdeoca led the Comets with 17 points, completing a double double while grabbing 12 rebounds. Sarah Hunt, Brecklen Morrison, and Lesley Chalmers joined Montesdeoca in double figures with 14, 13, and 11 points respectively.
Montesdeoca and Hadlock each moved up a spot in the Comets record book, with Montesdeoca moving to 9th all-time, and Hadlock moving into 7th all-time in Career Scoring.
