Comets Weekend Roundup: Track Takes On Coach Wilson Invitational

It was another busy weekend for the Cottey College Athletics Department with the Track team taking on the Coach Wilson Invitational, hosted by Wichita State University, and Basketball hosting Mission University for a home tilt.

The Coach Wilson Invitational saw the first Comet bring home the Gold when Kate Soukup clocked a 2:26 in the 800m Run to take 1st place in the event. Fellow Comet Hannah Hayduk took 5th in the event, while Freshman Jessie Mick took 13th. The 800m was the busiest event for the Comets, as Seniors Mikaela Fabey and Taylor Rechenmacher logged a 2:45 and 2:50 respectively in the event.

Four Comets took on the Mile, with Madalenn Fee, Avery Morris, Kyndal Soukup, and Taylor Rechenmacher all taking on the 1600M run. It was another Comet bringing home Gold in the event, when Fee would hit a National "B" standard on her way to a 1st place finish. Morris and Rechenmacher would also take on the 5k, where they would take 4th and 5th respectively. Fee also competed in Long Jump and the 200m dash as well. The 4x400M Relay team of Hannah Hayduk, Madalenn Fee, Mikaela Fabey, and Jessie Mick just missed out on a podium finish, taking 4th in the event with a time of 4:29.30.

Track returns to action at the Indoor Championships for the American Midwest Conference, hosted by Principia College in Illinois on February 15th.

Basketball took on Mission University in a tightly contested game, with the Comets falling 73-69.

The Comets fell behind in the 2nd quarter, and spent most of the 2nd half digging their way out of the deficit. They tied the game on three separate occasions, but could not get over the hump to take the lead. Mission would sink free throws to complete the contest at the end, taking the tough contest.

The 1st quarter was a quick up and down the court affair, with Mission leading 22-18. The Patriots would go 3/4 from beyond the arc to kickstart their game. The 2nd quarter saw Mission stay hot, while Cottey did not. Cottey would go 3-18 from the field in the quarter, falling behind the Patriots by 14 at the half. In the 2nd half, Cottey would begin to claw their way back into the contest, taking the 3rd frame 17-14 in scoring. In the 4th, Sarah Hunt would will the Comets back into the contest with 13 points, combined with Autumn Wallace's 8 in the frame to bring Cottey to the edge of victory. The game's momentum shifted when Wallace would pick up her 5th foul with 45 seconds remaining. Mission would sink their free throws, and a Hunt 3 pointer on the other end would not go, effectively closing out the game.

Cottey falls to 14-7 on the year, and 10-5 in American Midwest Conference. Cottey will host Hannibal LaGrange on Thursday for a home contest, with a 5:30pm tipoff.
