The Cottey College Volleyball team has put some early miles in this season, heading to another tournament for a weekend full of action. This time it was Sioux City, IA as the host of the Comets. Cottey took on four separate opponents in the tournament, bringing home a 1-3 record from the event. The first match was perhaps the most exciting, with the Comets mounting a huge comeback in a 3-2 victory over Haskell Indian Nations University. Cottey would drop matches to York University, Briar Cliff University, and Morningside University.
Elena Adams led the way in the first match victory over Haskell, putting up 17 Kills and adding 7 Digs in the match. Magdalen Dougherty also reached double-digit Kills with 10, while adding 9 Digs. Staley Stallaby provided senior leadership, as well as an impressive 27 Assists from the Setter. Kailee Hooper has grabbed a big role as a freshman, snagging 30 Digs as one of the top defensive players in the tournament.
Tatum Marang was the leader for Cottey as she logged 8 Kills in the match against Morningside, with Laurencia Botts directing the offense and putting up 5 Assists. Magdalen Dougherty showed why she was an All-Conference player last year, as she was the leader in the match against Briar Cliff, registering 9 Kills and 7 Digs, as well as an Ace. Mckinzie Bohrer showed her experience, adding 9 Digs as a defensive specialist.
Another match that was a back and forth affair saw the Comets fall to York University 1-3. The Comets took the 2nd set but couldn't keep the momentum rolling, as the Panthers would reclaim the upper hand and end up taking the match. Marang and Dougherty each had 11 Kills, while Hooper once again led in Digs with 22. Raelin Calderon took advantage of her opportunities, posting a .429 hitting percentage on her 6 Kills.
The Comets sit at 2-6 on the season, hitting the road again on Thursday for a matchup with Ozark Christian College.
