
It was a busy weekend for Cottey Athletics, with multiple programs on road trips for competition.
First, the Cottey Volleyball team finished out their season on the road at Williams Baptist and Crowley's Ridge. Shortly afterward, the American Midwest Conference named their All-Conference award honorees. Five Comets were recognized: Gracie Mead, Staley Stallaby, Magdalen Dougherty, Kailee Hooper, and Tatum Marang. Marang, Hooper, Dougherty, and Stallaby were all named Honorable Mention for their play during this season. Gracie Mead was named Cottey's Champions of Character Award recipient. The Champions of Character Award recognizes student athletes who embody the Five Core Values of the NAIA; Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Sportsmanship, and Servant Leadership. The Comets 2024 season has finished, and now turn towards 2025 with two Seniors graduating. Staley Stallaby and Laurencia Botts will both graduate this spring, and have made monumental contributions to the program.
Comets Basketball was also back in action this weekend, having two games in the MACU Classic in Oklahoma. The Comets would fall in both contests againts Mid-America Christian and John Brown after near tied contests going into each 4th quarter. Sarah Hunt continues to be a consistent leading scorer, putting up 11 and 23 points in each game respectively. Autumn Wallace and Claudia Hadlock shared top billing with 19 points apiece against John Brown, while Akyria James and Sara Montesdeoca saw double figures against MACU. The Comets return to action for a Home game on Wednesday against Avila University. During that contest, proceeds from the gate, concessions, and silent auction will be given to a Cottey employee whose family is battling cancer. There will be staff on site to accept donations for anyone wishing to give for cancer relief. The game is set to start at 6:30pm on Wednesday evening.
The Esports team had a few matches to close out the regular season, with all three teams falling short in their finales. However, each team has qualified for the playoffs, and look to make waves in the postseason.
