COMETS SWEPT BY 16TH RANKED CBC TO FALL TO 10-4

NEVADA, MO. –The Comets were swept by Central Baptist (16) to extend their losing streak to three on Saturday afternoon at Vanek Family Memorial Field.  Central Baptist improved to 11-2 while Cottey fell to 10-4 on the season.

GAME ONE:
Central Baptist jumped out to a two-run lead in the top of the second on two separate defensive miscues with two outs. Cottey took advantage of four walks and two HBP in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3 -2 lead.  The lead did not hold for long as CBC answered with a solo homerun to start the top of the third off the bat of Allison Seats (JR/Jacksonville, AR.).

The 3-3 tie lasted until the top of the fifth. Alyssa Estrada (SR/Houston, TX.) led off with a single and later scored on a Katie Gordon (JR/Beebe, AR.) base hit. Rachael Jones (SR/Conway, AR.) delivered the big blow with a two out double to score Seats and Gordon giving the Mustangs a 6-3 lead.  The Comets falling behind for the second time in the game responded with a three-run inning of their own.  Lacey Cruz (FR/Osh Kosh, WI.) and Lauren Johnson (FR/Lockport, IL.) led off the inning with singles and Aryana Palencia (FR/Phoenix, AZ.) launched a 2-2 pitch over the left-centerfield wall for a three-run homer.

Karina Ramirez (FR/Buckeye, AZ.) was thrown out at the plate to end the sixth inning trying to advance from first on a Cruz double. The close play gave the Mustangs momentum to start the top of the seventh.  Seats again delivered in the clutch with a one out single and advanced into scoring position on a Gordon fielder's choice.  Baleigh Jackson (JR/Monticello, AR.) ripped the first pitch into the right-center gap for a double for the game winning RBI.  Allie St. John (SO/Conway, AR.) preserved the one run lead with a one hit seventh inning to secure her first save of the season.

Ashlyn Spears (FR/Cabot, AR.) earned the win for the mustangs after coming on in relief to improve to 4-1 on the season. Cruz (6-1) went the distance for the Comets and took her first loss of the season.

GAME TWO:

Central Baptist scored early and often in game 2. The Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on two hits from Gordon and Jackson.  They increased the lead with four runs in the second on a two-run home run from Kirstie Blackwood (JR/Williburton, OK.) and an RBI double from Estrada.  Emily Killion (JR/Wheaton, MO.) didn't get an out in the second and was charged with six runs on seven hits.

Cottey emptied the bench as Central Baptist continued to increase their lead every inning.  The Mustangs added four more in the third inning off of Kristen Hurst (FR/Rison, AR.) on back to back doubles by Spears and Blackwood.  CBC added one more for good measure in the fourth on a Jones solo homerun.

The Comets never got into a groove only mustering four hits off of Kalyne Powell (JR/Springhill, AR.) who completed the five-inning shutout. Jordan Gibson (FR/ Roseburg, OR.) led the Comets with two hits. Powell improved to 4-0 with the victory while Killion fell to 1-1 on the season.

UP NEXT:

The Comets (10-4) will have to rebound quickly tomorrow when they host Missouri Valley College (4-2) for a double header starting at noon.
