Comets Split Weekend Series with Stephens and Columbia

Comets Split Weekend Series with Stephens and Columbia

It was a weekend of mixed results for the Cottey Softball team, going 1-1 against both Stephens College and Columbia College.

The opening game of the weekend against Stephens got off to a slow start, with the Stars taking the opener 3-0. Amelia Gassman took the circle for the Comets, and did her best to limit Stephens on the bases, striking out 4 on the game. Lauren Johnson was a bright spot on offense, going 2 for 3. Game 2 saw Abigail McPherson get the start, going all 7 innings and scattering 8 hits across the innings, only giving up 1 run. The offense got back into the game, seeing Johnson again go 2 for 3. Alyssa Ysla had the lone RBI for the Comets, but errors let Cottey score two more for a 3-1 victory. Aryana Palencia had the lone extra base hit of the series, hitting a double in Game 2.

The next series saw the Comets take on Columbia College. The opener was a marathon, with the Cougars taking Game one 3-2 in 10 innings. Alyssa Montoya got the start, and limited the Cougars to one run through the first 9 innings, but unfortunately Columbia got the needed runs in the bottom of the 10th inning. Cottey scored in the 4th inning when Aariana Castillo singled to bring Lauren Johnson home. The Comets even looked like they might take the game when Ysla's sac fly scored Palencia in the top of the 10th. However, the Cougars would get 2 in the bottom of the inning to win the game. Game two saw the bats finally come alive, as the Comets took it 6-1. Amelia Gassman, Alyssa Ysla, and Aryana Palencia all hit doubles in the game. Abigail Mcpherson went all 7 innings to get the Win for the Comets.

The Softball Comets have a few days off before returning this weekend for two Home series against UHSP and Harris-Stowe on Saturday and Sunday. Gametimes are set for 2/4pm each day.
