The Cottey College Comets Basketball season saw 2023 turn into 2024 with an 8-4 record, a historic milestone for Head Coach Maryann Mitts, and plenty of games on the schedule to make their mark this season. The 2nd half of the season starts tomorrow, as the Comets take on Williams Baptist in a 5:30pm contest. They will also suit up at Home on Saturday against Central Baptist with a 1pm gametime. Both teams are AMC conference opponents. The Comets currently boast a perfect 5-0 mark at home.
The Comets had some injuries early in the season, but hope to have those players back for the 2nd half of the season. Cottey also had one graduate who completed their degree, Derin Akdeniz. Akdeniz finished her collegiate career as a significant part of the Comet culture, and the team will surely miss her presence.
The Comets have been led in scoring by Sarah Hunt, averaging 14 points per contest, with Autumn Wallace just behind at 13.8. Dally Coulter has been a stalwart inside, averaging 7.5 rebounds per contest, while also shooting 90.9% from the free throw line. Freshman Jya Barksdale has been called upon early in her collegiate career to be a primary ball handler, and has developed quickly into a quick pace tough to guard asset. Seniors Lauren Jones and Olivia Pruitt have provided veteran leadership and come up clutch in some of the biggest moments this season.
