It was a tight contest the entire way, regulation time wasn't enough to separate the Eagles of Williams Baptist and the Cottey Comets. In the end, the Eagles hit a few more shots and took the win 75-71 in OT.
The Comets have a different look this semester with the graduation of a player and some injuries still lingering. But the leading scorers for the Comets, Sarah Hunt and Autumnn Wallace, continue to pour in the buckets. They had 20 and 15 points respectively. They were joined in double figures by Jya Barksdale with 10. Sara Montesdeoca and Dally Coulter each contributed 9 points as well. Sophomore Claudia Hadlock returned from injury to get her first game action since suffering an injury early in the season. She was able put in 8 points, going 4-4 from the Free Throw line.
The Eagles made a great gesture pregame by giving Comet assistant coach Evan Belk diapers in the starting lineup line; an ode to the new dad.
After that, it was game on. The Eagles are one of the highest scoring teams in the country, but the Comets were able to keep them in check for the first half. At the end of the first quarter, it was 20-18 Cottey. The 2nd quarter saw more of the same, with only 18 points between both teams in the lowest scoring quarter of the game. This led to a halftime score of 30-26 for the Comets.
The Eagles made adjustments at halftime and returned to their scoring ways, getting 12 points from Carmen Taylor in the 3rd, off the strength of 4 three pointers. Some shots came from well outside of the arc, and brought her team back into the game. The Comets began to get in foul trouble, with point guard Jya Barksdale having to sit out big stretches. With injuries to the point guard position, the Comets were a bit out of sorts, but still very much in the game.
In the 4th, the game continued to be a back and forth affair. With 2 minutes remaining, the score was 64-60 for the Eagles after a Kaylee Clark free throw. Jya Barksdale made a nifty dribble drive for a layup to cut the deficit. On the other end, the Eagles missed 2 free throws giving the Comets a chance to tie or take the lead with a bucket. They could not convert and opted to play defense with around 45 seconds remaining. The Eagles could not convert either, and the Comets had the ball with 12 seconds left. Jya Barksdale once again hit a shot to tie the game up. That would take the game to overtime. The Eagles scored on their first possession, and the Comets were chasing for all of overtime. They could not hit the shots, and end up falling to 8-5 with the loss.
The next game is at Home on Saturday January 6th at 1pm, when the Comets host Central Baptist.
